Heirloom Tomatoes with Gin, Juniper, Basil, and Black Bread

* 2 pounds assorted heirloom tomatoes , cored and cut into large chunks
* 1/2 cup gin (must be high quality, such as No. 209 or Hendrick's)
* 1/4 tsp. finely ground juniper berries ; available at TheSpiceHouse.com
* 2 thinly sliced shallots
* 2 cloves garlic , peeled and finely grated
* 1 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar , plus more to taste
* 1 tsp. sea salt , plus more to taste
* 1/2 bunch of basil
* 8 thin slices pumpernickel bread
* Extra-virgin olive oil
* Freshly ground pepper

Directions
In a bowl, gently combine tomatoes, gin, juniper berries, shallots, garlic, vinegar, and sea salt. Pick unbruised whole leaves (about 20) from basil to reserve as a garnish; store in a cool place. Add rest of basil, including stems, to the bowl. Let tomatoes marinate for 1 to 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 225°. Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet and brush with olive oil; add a pinch of sea salt. Dry in oven until crisp, about 20 minutes.

Adjust seasoning of tomatoes with more salt or balsamic vinegar to taste; break toasted bread into small pieces. To serve, divide tomatoes and bread evenly among 4 plates. Drizzle generously with olive oil, garnish with reserved basil leaves, and add salt and pepper to taste.

Fluid extract of Coca: 3 drams USP
Citric acid: 3 oz
Caffeine: 1 oz
Sugar: 30 (unclear quantity)
Water: 2.5 gal
Lime juice: 2 pints, 1 quart
Vanilla: 1 oz

Hasen points to an article by Rick Pildes,and thinks its very important and will be influential. Pildes suggests replacing primaries with an IRV general election.
This is not the worst imaginable system. It lets republicans prefer republicans, democrats prefer democrats, independents to vote for who they like,and the mechanism sorts it out till a winner is a declared. I tried to think about what are the possible flaws. I'm not one of those political scientists expert at applying game theory to election procedures. But here's what I've come up with. Pildes' system will encourage each faction to coalesce around a front runner. Because when one party has a front runner and the other party has a hotly contested race, the front-runner is more likely to pick up enough votes from independents to reach a majority, on some round of balloting. I could be wrong about this, but that seems to be how it would shake out.
That provides an incentive for parties to develop mechanisms to find a front runner, and these mechanisms might be less democratic in process.
Here in Indiana, the parties hold a slating convention, at which candidates can buy onto a slate by donating 10% of a year's salary. If more than one person buys in, the convention decides between them. Voting is done by precinct captains, who are usually controlled by a county chair. The slated candidate usually but not always wins at the primary. Indiana's slating convention is an example of the "smoke-filled room" method. Both times I've run as Republican in Indiana, I was not the slated candidate. In my first race neither I or my opponent was slated. This time the slated candidate ended up not filing and I was unopposed at the primary.
The jaybird primary, a privately held whites-only primary found unconstitutional in one of the White Primary cases from 1940s Texas, is another example of a mechanism to determine a front runner before the official election.
Primaries were one of the great reforms of the progressive era, 1900-1920. The goal was to reduce the power of the bosses and empower the rank and file party member.
Various plans to eliminate or re-tinker the primary system, including Pildes' proposal, blanket primaries or top-two run-off systems, risk undercutting this progressive goal of democratizing the party nomination process.
I agree with Pildes (and others) that IRV is a sensible way to run elections and has cost savings over a run-off method. But I do not agree that his system eliminates the need for primaries altogether. He would need to make a stronger case that the cost savings outweigh the value of the democratic processes lost in the shuffle if we eliminate the primary in exchange for an IRV general election.
Maybe one of the game theory types can comment on my concerns.

I am a vegan, and as such I must let everyone know. You see, as a vegan I have self esteem problems, and by letting everyone know of my ethically and morally superior lifestyle I am proving I am better than you.

You see, I have a psychological impairment that does not allow me to differentiate between animals as food and humans. You know how pets like cats and dogs are bread with certain characteristics to make them more appealing to humans, well its like that except I am attracted to, I mean I feel for all the worlds animals.

I am educated (obviously as a vegan more educated than you) and believe in evolution. The traits that humans exhibit such as, poor ability to digest plant matter (I do fart too much and my breath wreaks), omnivore digestion system and lactose tolerance past adolescence are things I don't understand because its just carnivore propaganda that everyone just calls proven facts.

I, being so in tune with nature, only eat organic. Even though organic food means nothing, I choose to believe it makes me better. The food I eat is so natural, even though I must eat lots of heavily processed foods (like soy) fortified with nutrients (mostly made from the byproducts of bacteria one would never eat) I can't get just from plant life. And because it is not possible to maintain my health using only local plants, the extra carbon created by all the hauling of foods from around the world to me is offset by how awesome I am.

I am vegan, and although my diet isn't healthy or sustainable, I am better than you.

May 24 2008: TEDsters - I just read a few of the comments and just wanted to weigh in. On the Life Box - we have writtien the Agriculture Depts of every state (except Hawaii) to make sure the tree seeds we are including are permitted. On the mycopesticides, please see the Guiding Principles I have listed, attached to my patents, in Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World. I realize how potent this mycotechnology is and it must be carefully presented. The EPA has studied Metarhizium for more than 20 years, and its use for termite and ant control is encouraged. By the way, every termite and ant colony has Metarhizium fungi associated with it. This is a dance that has been going on for hundreds of millions of years. And, no need to get paranoid about a fungus eating humans - lots of them out there already. I am not promoting these. Mycophobia is the term mycologists use to explain the irrational fear of fungi - like any form of biological prejudice, ignorance creates fear, fear creates prejudice. Knowledge surpasses both. We have lots to learn, but what I and my colleagues have discovered should give hope and tools for helping healing ecosystems and preventing zoonotic diseases.

My name is Robbin Stewart. I have been a research subject at Covance
for the past two years. Recently I've been effectively banned from
further studies, after I attempted to rely on the written rule that any

But even if I was wrong, and there really is no such rule, it is
unethical and a violation of informed consent to ban me from studies
simply for asking that such a rule be enforced, when the written rules
that every participant signed and agreed to stated that there was such
a rule.
Informed consent is the most basic ethical principle governing drug
studies, and was instituted in response to the Tuskegee Experiments
and the experiments conducted by Dr. Menengele.
If subjects can be banned for pointing out when the rules aren't
followed, this is coersion and duress, rather than informed consent
and voluntary participation.

Facts:
I participated in a study at Covance Evansville in December 2008.
It was my 4th study there since 2007. Iv'e also done a study at
Madison, and had hoped to do studies in Florida as well.
I signed a consent agreement which included a rider labeled "RULES".
RULES was in all caps, large type, and bold print.
I reasonably believed that these were rules. I might or might not have
been wrong about that - I have been told that the rules are only
“guidelines” and not actually rules.
One of the rules stated that
the bedroom is a quiet area. “If one of the roommates requests that the
Television. be turned off, subjects must comply.”
My 2 roommates kept the television on all the time, except between
about 2 and 6 am. Usually they chose violent police shows.
On the third or fourth day of the study, I requested that the
Television be turned off, since I wanted to have some peace and quiet to
work and read and sleep.
They refused. One of them went to a nurse, who said that there wasn't
any such rule and they could keep the television on.
I asked to speak to the study coordinator to find out what the policy
was. At first Nancy agreed with me that there was such a rule, and went
in to explain it to my roommates. I do not know what was said between
them, but when she came out, she denied that there was any such rule,
and allowed them to keep the television on.
Thereafter I mostly stayed out of the room, and tried to find any
somewhat quieter place to read. I wasn't able to get any work done
that week.
The next day, when we discussed it again, Nancy told me that I would
be excluded from further studies.
I dropped my request for a quiet area, and asked to be kept in studies.
Doing studies is my primary source of income, and Covance is my main study site.
I have averaged $8,000 a year from Covance for the past two years, and
desire to continue. Covance volunteers make as much as $20,000/yr.
Without that income, I can't pay my rent, so I'll be moving out of my
apartment next month.
The situation was left unclear when I finished the study in December.
In January I was kept out of screening for a study in Evansville and was
told that there is an 8 day restriction on my participation in
studies. This effectively prevents me from doing studies there. All of
my previous studies have been over 8 days. There aren't any current
less-than-8-day studies. Because of the 30 day washout, it's
uneconomical to do a less-than 8 day study. Later in January I was
prevented from screening for a $3,000 AIDS medication study in
Madison, and found out for the first time that I am banned system wide
and not just in Evansville. Later in January I was prevented from
screening for a $5,000 study of periods of less than 8 days -
effectively I have been totally banned.
Although my main reason for doing studies is to earn a living, I also
value participating in AIDS research, in memory of my friend Phil who
died of AIDS.

I have spoken to the study doctor, Dr. Stewart, who ratified the
decision to exclude me from studies. In going through channels to try
to resolve this, I have spoken to "Mary", not further identified, but
seems to be an administrator in Evansville, who has told me that the
notes in my file would be changed to no longer a show a ban, but just
a recommendation that I not be used in studies of more than 8 days.
However, in talking to recruiters at Madison, they say there has been
no change to the notes, and Mary has not reponded to my request that
she call me, for over a week.

Claims:
The informed consent documents including the document labeled "RULES",
are important for two reasons. First, they are a contract. Contracts
have explicit and implied terms. The explicit term is that the
bedrooms are a quiet area and roommates "must" turn off the television
when requested.
Under Indiana law, every contract has a implied term of a duty of good faith.
Covance violated its contract with me when they refused to let me turn
off the television, or have some other quiet area.
More importantly, it violated the duty of good faith when it banned me
for simply requesting that the rules be followed.

Second:
Covance violated the principle of informed consent when it retaliated
against me for asking that a rule be followed.
Covance obtained my consent by, among other things, offering a rule
that ensured I would have a quiet place so I could get work done during
the study and be able to read and sleep.
Based on that consent agreement, I took experimental medication.
However, the consent agreement was a fraud, and there wasn't actually a
quiet place available. When I exposed the fraud by asking whether
there really was such a rule as claimed in the rules document, I was
retaliated against by being threatened with being banned from future
studies.

For a medical research company, Covance, and its doctor, Dr. Stewart, and
its employees, Nancy and Mary, to violate informed consent is a very
serious ethical breach.
It is also legally actionable as battery by deception under Indiana code.

Currently, I have been continuing to try to address the problem internally by
going through channels at Covance. I will continue up the chain of
command at Covance until the matter is resolved or cannot be resolved
internally, before turning to any
outside authorities.

What I am looking for is complete reinstatement as a Covance medical
research subject; an agreement that I won't be excluded from studies
for any non-medical reason.

Less importantly, it would helpful to know, going forward, if there
are any other "rules" that aren't really rules, and whether or not
there will be any designated quiet area for Evansville research
subjects.

Unanimous Court upholds RLUIPA

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court today upheld the constitutionality of a federal law requiring state prisons to accommodate inmate religions.

Justices unanimously sided with Ohio inmates, including a witch and a Satanist, who had claimed they were denied access to religious literature, ceremonial items and time to worship.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000, which was intended to protect the rights of prisoners, is not an unconstitutional government promotion of religion.

"It confers no privileged status on any particular religious sect, and singles out no bona fide faith for disadvantageous treatment," Ginsburg wrote in Cutter v. Wilkinson, 03-9877. ( i seem to have misunderstood cutter v wilkinson, might need to re-read it.)

(b) BURDEN OF PERSUASION- If a plaintiff produces prima facie evidence to support a claim alleging a violation of the Free Exercise Clause or a violation of section 2, the government shall bear the burden of persuasion on any element of the claim, except that the plaintiff shall bear the burden of persuasion on whether the law (including a regulation) or government practice that is challenged by the claim substantially burdens the plaintiff's exercise of religion.

Inmates have a right to a diet that sustains them in good health and satisfies the dietary needs of their religion. McElyea v. Babbitt, 833 F.2d 196, 198 (9th Cir.1987); see also 28 CFR Sec. 548.13 (prison should comply with religious dietary laws to the extent practicable within the constraints of budget limitations and the security and orderly running of the institution and the BOP)

To: Indianapolis police, prosecutor, court 13.
RE: Citation Q376889

Rochester Foster is an authorized driver of my pick up truck.
It had been sitting off-road inoperable for months, and I had let the plates expire.
Rochester towed it to my new house on Washington Street,noticed that it was fixable, and fixed it over the weekend. On Monday I went to the Virginia Avenue branch of the BMV to renew the plates, but they are closed on Mondays.
Tuesday morning he and I were working on a broken dryer, which turned out to not be fixable. He decided to take the truck to my other house and get a working dryer from there. I did not remember to tell him I had not yet gotten the plates. He probably did not check to see if there were new plates on it, and probably didn't know the plates were still expired. He got a ticket for operating with expired plates. I got the plates that afternoon, $74, transaction # 91950770194.
Since the problem has been promptly corrected, I would appreciate it as a matter of professional courtesy if the ticket could be dismissed.
Rochester Forster has been recently homeless, is living in subsidized housing near me on Washington Street, does not have a job,and is a volunteer preacher and cook at our neighborhood church, Trinity House. I know that it would be a hardship for him to be subjected to a fine that he has no present ability to pay.

Property Tax Appeal for 225-227 N Temple.

I , Robbin Stewart, state the following under penalty of perjury.
I swear and affirm that I state the truth to the best of my knowledge and belief.

Yesterday I went to City Hall, the Auditor's office, and paid $2540 to redeem my house at 227 N Temple from the tax sale, which had been sold to the county after no-one was willing to buy it for $2540. That is more than I have earned so far this year.
The reason I have not been paying the taxes is that the amount was wrong, and I've been unable to get a corrected bill to pay.
Currently the house is valued at $21,200, which is a correct valuation.
When I bought it in 1996, it was valued at 12,600. I paid $17,500.
Between 2002 and 2005, it was assessed at $55,200. I appealed that mis-assessment,and reached an agreement with the assessors office for $30,000 in 2004.
The initial agreement was over the phone,and I then went in and signed and handed back an offer from the city. I regard that signed acceptance of the offer as legally binding. Because I am organizationally challenged, and my life is stored in 50 cardboard boxed, some of which have flood damage, I do not at the moment have a copy of that agreement to show you. I certify and attest that there was such an agreement.
When I returned the document, I included a written statement that I was agreeing under duress. This statement was true - my house was scheduled to be sold at the tax sale. What happened next was that the official I was speaking with became enraged. He spent about 4 minutes yelling at me, and called sheriff's deputies to eject me from the building. This ejection was a violation of my 4th Amendment and Article 1 section 11 rights, although I chose not to sue.
No record of my acceptance of the offer was made; instead, I learned yesterday, false information was entered into my file that I had rejected the offer.
My appeal was scheduled for a hearing before the board. I did not attend that hearing, because I consider the matter to have been finalized when I accepted the offer for $30,000.
I continued to be incorrectly billed for taxes calculated at the 55,200 figure, including the 2005 taxes which I paid yesterday.
I am seeking for the county to honor the $30,000 agreement, and refund the excess taxes billed for 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Alternatively, I ask that the 2004 hearing be vacated, since at the time the board lacked jurisdiction to hold a hearing since the matter had been finalized by my acceptance of the county's offer, and a new hearing be held. Relevant to a new hearing is the sworn evidence that the purchase price was $17,500, that the current valuation is 21,200, that I attested in my appeal that the value was $20,000, that I have not been able to sell the property, that there were no bidders at $2540, and that properties in the 00-300 blocks of North Temple sell for $100 to $30,000, with an average price of about $15,000.

I am Robbin Stewart. In 2002 my house at 225-227 N Temple was miss-assessed at 55,200, from $12,600 previously. I filed an appeal. In 2004, I settled that appeal with an agreed settlement of $30,000, by signing and returning the County's offer of settlement. Due to misconduct by a former employee of the County, that settlement was not entered into the records. Instead, a hearing was held, at which I did not appear, since the matter was final, at which my appeal was denied and the full mis-assessment of $55,200 continued.
In this motion, I am asking the board to vacate the previous hearing,reopen the appeal, and to either
accept the $30,000 which was the agreed settlement, or to schedule a new hearing.
To do otherwise than to grant this motion, or find some comparable relief, would be to knowing participate in an injustice.
This board has jurisdiction to vacate its prior hearing based on new evidence that the board lacked jurisdiction to hold the prior hearing, or, if it did not, to find that notice was improper, where a party reasonably believed that the matter was settled, based on his acceptance of a settlement.

General Tso's Tofu

replace chick w tofu
Sauce
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 tsp minced garlic
1 1/2 tsp minced ginger root
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup cooking wine
1 1/2 cups hot chicken broth
1 tsp salt (optional)

Mix 1/2 cup cornstarch with water. Add garlic, ginger, sugar, 1/2 cup soy sauce, vinegar, wine, chicken broth and salt (if desired). Stir until sugar dissolves. Refrigerate until needed.

Chicken
3 lbs deboned chicken (white/breast meat), cut into large chunks
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 tsp white pepper
1 egg
1 cup cornstarch
Vegetable oil for deep-frying

In separate bowl, mix chicken, 1/4 cup soy sauce and white pepper. Stir in egg. Add 1 cup cornstarch and mix until chicken pieces are coated evenly. Add cup of vegetable oil to help separate chicken pieces. Divide chicken into small quantities and deep-fry at 350 degrees until crispy. Drain on paper towels.

Stir-Fry
2 cups sliced green onions
16 small dried hot peppers

Place a small amount of oil in wok and heat until wok is hot. Add onions and peppers and stir-fry briefly. Stir sauce and add to wok. Place chicken in sauce and cook until sauce thickens.

I am a vegan, and as such I must let everyone know. You see, as a vegan I have self esteem problems, and by letting everyone know of my ethically and morally superior lifestyle I am proving I am better than you.

You see, I have a psychological impairment that does not allow me to differentiate between animals as food and humans. You know how pets like cats and dogs are bread with certain characteristics to make them more appealing to humans, well its like that except I am attracted to, I mean I feel for all the worlds animals.

I am educated (obviously as a vegan more educated than you) and believe in evolution. The traits that humans exhibit such as, poor ability to digest plant matter (I do fart too much and my breath wreaks), omnivore digestion system and lactose tolerance past adolescence are things I don't understand because its just carnivore propaganda that everyone just calls proven facts.

I, being so in tune with nature, only eat organic. Even though organic food means nothing, I choose to believe it makes me better. The food I eat is so natural, even though I must eat lots of heavily processed foods (like soy) fortified with nutrients (mostly made from the byproducts of bacteria one would never eat) I can't get just from plant life. And because it is not possible to maintain my health using only local plants, the extra carbon created by all the hauling of foods from around the world to me is offset by how awesome I am.

I am vegan, and although my diet isn't healthy or sustainable, I am better than you.
