while at the LP convention in Ohio, i had two interesting discussions, one with my state chair,
Dan Drexler, and one with the new national chair, Nick Sarwark.
these are some notes.
states: Dan has said that it's not the state's job to recruit local candidates; that that's a county function.
But nothing stops an individual or group from going out and recruiting candidates.
So that' the task. What needs to be done:
1. support the current candidates, 40 or 50 of them.
2. begin recruiting candidates for spring.municipal elections.
3. begin recruiting people to serve on appointed boards and commissions.
4.begin recruiting for 2016.
2 in more detail:
set up a recruitment committee. completely unofficial, only finds and recommends for nomination, does not nominate anyone.
have prospective candidates set up exploratory committee, whether official or usually unofficial.
their first task:
1 recruit an opponent, so that the county will have to choose between you. preferably a candidate better than you are, richer better looking more well known etc. more female/nonwhite etc.
2. recruit someone to run in the major party primary to defeat the incumbent; it's easier to win the general election when you've chosen your opposition. if you think it will be a 3 way race, do this with both major parties. (optional, use fusion to knock off one or both.)
3. recruit a campaign manager, have them take over running the campaign.
4. make signs.
5. raise money.
nick sarwark is a lawyer, former programmer, public defender, blogger, has enthusiasm, shook my hand and asked for my vote. i read his personal blog, good guy. i voted for him on the second ballot when he won.
(i abstained on the first ballot, my state chair as running. starchild got 3 write-ins.)
we talked about how i want to help with ballot access cases, and he was psyched. says he was motivated to go to law school by IJ. I need to give him a week or two to settle in and write to him with more detail.

today is friday.
i bought a computer, $75 + tacks, and a $15 phone.
didn't do much else. planted some flower bulbs, dahlias and glads and such.
finished swanson on swanson, wonderful book.
also went to indiana supreme court library in the capitol and looked up the annotated rhode island constitution which has been on my list for a month.
still to do today, get phone working, call mom, make list, make comic.
thursday i flirted with ivan, asked him about his life. phillipines, hawaii, here, 19, anime geek. took him dumpster diving. we bonded over penny arcade. he'll be in buffalo for 2 months. i'm not sure i have his email. one drink at the club, gave chase my address, he didnt come over. sylvia gave me a chinup bar, which i can hardly use, those muscles are atrophied. i broke into greg's room and cleared out trash and dirty dishes.
wednesday i tried to be productive. right now i don't remember what all did. same dumpster, 100 pounds of flour and other goodies. p o. box, bank, oil change. met with joe unless that was thursday.
need to look up where the volvo dealership is and go get a key made for #50.
so, phone, volvo, check emails, make a better list, hope sylvia can recover the brief from the hard drive because i dont think i emailed myself a copy.
